WHS Boys Lacrosse Coaches

EVAN WHELCHEL - D1 HEAD COACH
Coach Whelchel is entering his third season as the Head Coach of the Westlake High School Lacrosse Club. For High School, he attended St. Mary’s Hall where he would serve as team captain for three years, MVP for two years and All-state for his sophomore, Junior and senior seasons. In his senior season Evan lead St. Mary’s Hall to their first Texas State Championship appearance. Upon graduation he attended Franklin and Marshall and played as a midfielder on their varsity squad.


After graduation Evan returned to Austin and helped found the Austin Crossfire Lacrosse Club (2001-05) and served as VP and Team Captain. From 2003 to 2005, Evan was head coach at St. Michael’s Academy After two great seasons at St. Michael’s Coach Whelchel left Austin for a year to be the full-time varsity assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan which went 12-3 in the NCAA DIII tournament that year before and then decided to return to Austin to start his family with his wife, Megan.

Upon returning to Austin Evan took over the Westwood Lacrosse Program and served as their Head Coach for three winning seasons. Evan was as also the Head Coach of the Trilogy Elite Select team for two years and the ATX Elite Select Team for one year. He currently serves as the founding member and Co-Head Coach of Team Austin as well as sits on the All-American Selection Committee for the State of Texas.

MATT MCINTOSH - D1 OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR
Coach McIntosh grew up in Brentwood, TN. He started playing lacrosse in 7th grade and was a two-time All American in high school. He was recruited to play at the University of North Carolina where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees. He moved to Austin two years ago, and this will be his third season coaching at Westlake. He is involved in the community through the Austin Stone Community Church and the Young Men's Business League.


MATT MALCOLM - ASST. D1 COACH
Coach Malcolm has been coaching in the Austin area for the past 4 years with various select and club teams. Matt played his high School Lacrosse locally at Bowie High School where earner All-State honors twice. For College he attended Texas State University and continued his successful Lacrosse career as a 4 year starting attackmen and Captain. His achieved many honors with the Bobcats: MCLA All American, 2X Lonestar Alliance MVP, 4X lonestar Alliance All-Conference Selection and 2007 Lonestar Alliance Rookie of the year.



JON NICKEL - D2 HEAD COACH
Coach Nickel grew up in Plano, Texas where he started playing lacrosse as a junior in High School. He attended the University of Texas from 2000-2005. During his time at Texas he won the Most Improved Player Award in 2003, and in 2004 helped the team win its first LSA Championship in 5 years defeating Texas A&M in the finals. Coach Nickel has been coaching in the Austin area since 2002 in youth leagues, camps, and clinics. From 2005-2009 he was an Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the Longhorns helping them win 2 LSA Conference Championships.

BEN FIGUEROA - ASST. D2 COACH
Ben comes to Westlake after serving as the Head Coach of the very successful Bowie Bulldogs Junior Varsity team and Varsity Assistant for 8 years. Ben is in fact a graduate of Bowie and played lacrosse all four years in high school. As a member of the Varsity Team Ben received All-State awards and was Team Captain.

FRANK LLAMO - ASST. D2 COACH

Coach Llamo comes to Westlake after taking a year off from coaching. Previously he spent 5 years coaching at Westwood as both a JV assistant and D2 offensive coordinator.  He grew up in Houston and moved to Rochester N.Y. toward the end of my 8th grade year which is where he picked up the sport of lacrosse, playing both the Attack and Mid Field as well as being the face-off guy. Coach Llamo moved back to Houston for his junior year of high school and was a founding member of the St. Thomas lacrosse program in the late 80’s. Coach Llamo played collage ball at Texas A&M University and for several club teams in Houston and Austin.



TOM KEATON - JV HEAD COACH
Tom Keaton joins the Westlake coaching staff as a player and student of the game for over 30 years and several years coaching at the high school and youth level. He played his college lacrosse as a goalie at Hope College during the regular season and with the University of Michigan team during the summers. He continued playing after college and during his military career in Detroit and Upstate New York, even coming out of “retirement” last year to play once again. Tom is a certified US Lacrosse coach and a Positive Coaching Alliance © double goal coach. As a retired US Army Ranger, he brings a focus on fundamentals, discipline, and teamwork with the ultimate goal of developing champions in life and on the field.

MIKE NUHN - ASST. JV COACH
Mike comes to Westlake after coaching at Westwood High School for five years; three as the head coach of a very successful junior varsity team and two years as an assistant on varsity as a goalie and defensive coach. Mike graduated from Westwood and played all four years there as a goalie, midfielder and a defenseman. Coach Nuhn was a member of the 1999 Westwood team that won the Jesuit Invitational tournament. He also won the Lax'n on the Red tournament defensive MVP trophy in 2005 as well as being a team captain his senior year. Mike then played for the Austin Lacrosse Club for two years before playing four years at Texas Tech, winning a conference championship in 2005 and playing in the conference tournament all four years.

MARQUES GREEN - ASST. JV COACH
Coach Green played his Collegiate Lacrosse at Texas State for 3 years and became a full-time starter after just 1 year with the team. In his second year he became Vice President and held the position of President during his third year with the team. During his time with the Bobcats Marques helped lead the team to 3 conference tournament appearances, last of which resulted in Texas states first conference championship and a birth to the MCLA National Conference tournament held in Denver, Co.
